80% of Portugal's Independent Restaurants and Bars Are Invisible to AI Search — Entering Peak Tourist Season

booteek.ai AI Visibility Index reveals that 4 in 5 independent venues across Porto, Braga, and Guimaraes don't exist when tourists ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI where to eat

New research from booteek.ai reveals that 80.5% of independent restaurants and bars in Portugal are invisible to AI assistants — just as the country enters its peak tourist season with nearly 3 million visitors expected in the first half of 2026.

The booteek AI Visibility Index, the first study of its kind in Portugal, analysed 995 independent restaurants and bars across Porto (702 venues), Braga (191 venues), and Guimaraes (102 venues). The findings confirm that the vast majority of Portugal's acclaimed independent dining scene simply does not appear when tourists ask AI assistants for recommendations.

This matters now because the shift to AI-powered discovery is accelerating. According to Graphite.io, AI tools now generate 45 billion monthly sessions worldwide — 56% of total global search volume. 37% of consumers now start searches directly in AI chatbots instead of Google. And 83% of that AI usage happens on mobile phones — exactly how tourists navigate a new city.

Google has also just launched Ask Maps — conversational AI powered by Gemini, built directly into Google Maps. Already live in the US and India, it allows users to ask Maps natural language questions like "find me a cosy restaurant with river views in Porto." Millions of American and Indian tourists arriving in Portugal this summer will already be using Ask Maps. If a venue's Google Business Profile is incomplete, Ask Maps cannot recommend it.

"Porto has one of the best food scenes in Europe — francesinha, bacalhau, the seafood in Matosinhos — and AI doesn't know most of it exists. When a tourist asks ChatGPT where to eat in Porto, 4 out of 5 independent restaurants and bars don't get mentioned. The tourist ends up at whatever the AI can find. That's not the real Porto."

Portugal Findings

Braga is the worst-affected city at 89.5% invisible. Porto, despite being Portugal's second-largest city and a major tourist destination, has 78.1% of its independent venues invisible to AI.

The booteek AI Visibility Index uses Perplexica, a self-hosted AI search engine, to simulate 65 real consumer questions in both English and Portuguese — queries like "best restaurants in Ribeira," "where to eat seafood in Matosinhos," and "melhores restaurantes na Baixa" — across 16 zones. Responses are cross-referenced against the full database of 995 verified independent venues sourced via Google Maps.

The Tourist Season Urgency

Portugal's hospitality sector is heavily tourism-dependent. With peak season beginning in June, the window to fix AI visibility is closing:

If you start now: Google indexes GBP changes in 2-4 weeks. AI assistants re-process sources in 6-10 weeks. A venue that completes its profile in March could be AI-visible by June.
If you wait: Another summer of tourists asking AI where to eat — and your venue not being in the answer.

The Global Context: Food & Drink Is the Most Vulnerable Sector

Data from Ahrefs (chatgpt-vs-google.com) shows that Food & Drink has the highest dependency on search traffic of any industry sector at 66.9%. Yet Google's overall traffic share has declined 3.4 percentage points in eight months.

The sector most dependent on search is the least prepared for the shift away from it.

The Wider Picture: 3 Countries, 21+ Cities, 4,060+ Venues

Portugal is not alone — but it is among the worst-affected markets. booteek's AI Visibility Index spans three European markets:
